WELCOME TO SMETA
The San Mateo Elementary Teachers' Association (SMETA) is the exclusive bargaining representative for all San Mateo - Foster City non-management certificated employees. Our membership is over 550 strong. SMETA is affiliated with the California Teachers' Association (CTA) and the National Education Association (NEA). We welcome you to our site and hope that you will find it both useful and informative.

NEW 8/27: CLICK HERE to read a joint CTA/NEA bulletin advising
members that SB 1285 (Steinberg Bill) is scheduled to be heard as
early as Monday, Aug. 30. This bill "establishes an unproven procedure
that will eliminate local control and aggravate the destabilizing and
traumatic impacts of teacher lay offs on schools and students." Read
the bulletin and learn how you can contact your lawmakers to urge
them to vote "NO" on this bill.

NEW 8/22: David A. Sanchez, President, California Teachers Association,
Dennis Van Roekel, President, National Education Association, and A.J. Duffy, President, United Teachers Los Angeles, respond to the L.A. Times decision to publish a database naming 6,000 teachers and purporting to rate their effectiveness. In a report to CTA Chapter Presidents, David A. Sanchez wrote, "What the LA Times is parading as in-depth and well-researched reporting is anything but. In fact, it’s harmful and inflammatory, and does nothing to offer a balanced story about what it takes to be a good teacher or improve student learning."
